Waterford to Mechanicville - 9 miles on the Canal

As you travel north from Waterford, the Hudson River continues 37 miles to Fort Edward and connects with a man made canal 23 miles long - The Champlain Canal - that then connects the Hudson to Lake Champlain. The Hudson River combined with the Champlain Canal is 60 miles from Waterford to the beginning of Lake Champlain. The Canal begins at 15 feet above seal level and steadily rises to 150 feet at Lock 8 (of 11 Locks on the canal). After Lock 9, the Canal descends to 97 feet at Lake Champlain. The lowest bridge clearance on this route is 17 feet just above Lock 3 and we cleared the bridge by 6 inches. The Locks were easy during the entire voyage over a couple of days since we were the only boat headed north - we passed a couple of sail boats headed south. At lock 2 we did share the lock with a tug and barge without difficulty.

This first picture is of downtown Waterford as we did the "self" tour of the homes. A lot of history in this small village. When we departed Waterford, "Just Relax" and "Happy Clamz" went through the first lock on the Erie Canal as we departed for the Champlain Canal. Our paths will cross again in the coming weeks as they turn to the northeast for the Down East Loop and we head west for The Great Loop. We look forward to seeing them again. The next picture is our first solo lock - one of many more to come. However, as mentioned above, we did share one lock with a tug and barge and needed to be careful as the barge creates a lot of turbulence with his engine. We made it safe! This next picture is Pia in the lock "manning the lines" - rubber gloves and all. As you can imagine, the lines can get dirty.

So, on Tuesday we made a whopping 9 miles and 2 Locks by ourself - didn't want to push our luck - and tied up to the town docks at Mechanicville, NY for the evening. We toured the village, found a Bank of America and a CVS pharmacy as well as a local Italian deli for takeout to have dinner on the boat. The first picture is us at the Mechanicville and the second is a sign we saw on the dock as some of the locals were fishing off the dock. Probably why we chose Italian food for dinner instead of a local fish restaurant.
Tomorrow morning - Wednesday - we will leave for Fort Edward, 28 miles and 5 locks and plan to stay at the town docks there.
